More than forty years after Neil Armstrong's historic footsteps, mankind is about to return to the Moon with an ambitious goal: to build a permanent outpost. New rockets and spacecraft are being built, and generations of astronauts are training for a first lunar landing in December 2019. During the summer of 2008, astronauts staged a dress rehearsal of their lunar mission on Devon Island near the North Pole. The crew of 30 men and women set up camp on the rim of Haughton Impact Crater - a 12 mile-wide basin blasted out of the deserted island by a colliding asteroid. It is a full-scale replica of Shackleton Crater on the Moon, where American, European and Japanese astronauts will land in 2019.
